  1. India defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets in a Women's T20 Asia Cup Group A match at Dubai International Stadium; Pakistan were bowled out for 55 (their lowest T20I total), Shree Charani took 3/7, and India made 57/3 in 8.7 overs.
  2. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered the China Masters men's doubles final at Shenzhen by defeating Malaysia's Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong 21-16, 18-21, 21-11.
  3. Teachers' Day 2026 (5 September) marked the birth anniversary of former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan; President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes at Rashtrapati Bhavan and conferred National Awards on teachers in New Delhi—82 selected: 48 from school education, 21 from higher education/polytechnics and 13 skill trainers; Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with winners at Lok Kalyan Marg.

  5. Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0 was approved on 5 May 2026; implemented by National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC), it aims to enable additional credit flow of up to ₹2.55 lakh crore to MSMEs, eligible non-MSME businesses and scheduled passenger airlines.
  6. The Union Cabinet approved the ₹37,500 crore Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects on 13 May 2026 to convert coal/lignite into syngas, methanol, ammonia and urea; first-round application deadline is 7 September 2026, and Talcher Fertilizers Limited and NTPC have submitted applications.
  7. The 18th BRICS Summit is being held in New Delhi on 12-13 September 2026; the inaugural iBRICS Summit 2026, organised by the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute (SWFI), will be held alongside it, with over 500 institutional investors and pension funds managing more than USD 1 trillion participating and covering 21 BRICS member states and partner nations.
  8. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the 28th meeting of the Western Zonal Council in Panaji, Goa on 7 September 2026; the Council comprises Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and the UT of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
  9. Dr Dinesh Sharma was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands by President Droupadi Murmu, effective from the date he assumes charge (announced 5 September 2026).
  10. Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan launched the India Valve Registry at the India Valves 2026 conference in Chennai to record data on patients undergoing heart valve interventions.
  11. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launched the 'CSS Shield' initiative of the Central Secretariat Service Forum, based on the principle 'Contribute for Family, Support with Dignity', to give collective financial support to bereaved families of CSS officers.
  12. Indore Metro Priority Corridor-2 was inaugurated on 5 September 2026, adding 11 km and 11 stations from Super Corridor-3 to Malviya Nagar Chauraha; Indore Metro now has 16 operational stations covering approximately 17 km.
  13. An NIA Special Court in Jagdalpur convicted all 10 living accused in the May 2013 Jheeram Valley Maoist attack, which killed 29 people; the quantum of punishment order was reserved for 16 September.
  14. In a joint Indian Army and Assam Rifles operation in Churachandpur, Manipur, two cadres of the outlawed United Kuki National Army (UKNA) were killed and two injured; security forces recovered two MA rifles, an AK-56 and a 40 mm Lathode gun.
  15. India's foreign exchange reserves surged by $11.4 billion to a record high of $740.8 billion in the week ended 28 August 2026; foreign currency assets stood at $600.6 billion and gold at $116.4 billion.
  16. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the centenary celebrations of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) on 5 September 2026; he cited India's 7.8% quarterly economic growth amid global uncertainty, and SRCC was founded by Sir Shri Ram.
  17. Coal India Limited supplied 322.90 million tonnes of coal during April-August FY 2026-27, 6.70% higher than 302.60 MT in the same period last year; August 2026 supply was 60.60 MT.

The National Biodiversity Authority's cumulative Access and Benefit-Sharing disbursements exceeded ₹200 crore; it sanctioned ₹8.23 crore to 27 State Biodiversity Boards and 5 UT Biodiversity Councils for crops including bitter gourd, okra, chilli and onion, with Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra as largest recipients.

On International Vulture Awareness Day 2026 (5 September), Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav called vultures nature's cleanup team; BNHS reported Melghat and Pench tiger reserves in Maharashtra as India's most successful captive-bred vulture reintroduction sites, with 29 vultures released recording survival rates up to 78%.
  20. The death toll in Nepal's flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August, rose to 1,344 on 5 September 2026; around 4,900-5,000 people remain missing.
  21. Bihar floods affected around 10 lakh people in 201 panchayats across 50 blocks in 11 districts; the Ganga at Patna's Gandhi Ghat reached 50.53 metres, 1 cm above the highest flood level, and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary carried out an aerial survey; over 1,20,000 people were provided meals through community kitchens.

  40. India and Nepal continued joint rescue operations at the Chilime hydropower tunnel; India is also building a Bailey bridge in Devighat to restore connectivity after the 26 August floods.
  41. Pralhad Joshi is the Union Minister for Education as of 5 September 2026; in a Teachers' Day article he said National Education Policy 2020 places the learner at the centre of education.
  42. Yogesh Singh is the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University as of 5 September 2026.
